I'd argue just as many important story moments happen "in-game" on the controller as they do in a non-interactive cutscene, which makes the whole experience more seamless. Throughout it all, the narrative is threaded with lots of fluid character interactions. One minute you're sneaking through an old cruise ship filled with zombies, the next you're in a flashback about a cherished childhood memory between Ellie and Joel. The high moments of combat and set pieces are offset by a variety of slower beats with environmental traversal, exploring for much needed supplies or just unique sequences.

Its a harsh, kill-or-be-killed world, and at least on Hard difficulty, you feel more like you survived by the skin of your teeth instead of an superheroic power fantasy. Guns feel weighty and powerful, and when you smack a hammer into somebody's skull, it FEELS like it fuckin' hurts. There's a flying by the-seat-of-your pants feeling to a lot of the larger battles, as resources are scarce and the player just has to make shit up as they go along. Combat arenas are larger, with a few more mobility/movement options available to the player, but its still the same mix of tense stealth leading to scrappy, improv heavy fights.
